Kurt Woodburn, Recovery Specialist, Human Resources:

Kurt WKurt Woodburn is a native Arizonan who grew up in the mining communities of Globe and Kearny. In high school, Kurt's claim to fame was winning a pole vault championship with a jump of 13 feet 6 inches. This should tell you a little bit about his personality! After saving his pennies from working in the copper mines, Kurt traveled in Europe for three months before returning to the University of Arizona. Beginning his junior year of college, Kurt identified his substance abuse problem. "Although I would not hit any sort of bottom until a decade later, the warning signs were there. The so-called 'coming of age partying' became a normal pattern of alcohol abuse." An introduction to cocaine came in the late seventies. Kurt refers to cocaine as his mistress for 25 years. During those years he entered the insurance business and managed to prosper to the point of owning his own financial planning business throughout the 1990's. The millennium, and more specifically 2002, brought the end of Kurt's financial career as well as the end of his substance abuse. "The bottom I experienced left me not just financially bankrupt, but soulless." Kurt humbly submitted his life to a power greater than himself from that moment forward. During his time of sobriety he has earned a degree in Chemical Dependency, yet what he brings to the table is actual experience from life's tragedies caused by substance abuse to life's possibilities in sobriety.Kurt is happily married with six children, some grown, some growing (teenagers). He acknowledges that only by grace can he live with these blessings.

"Our common aspiration at Scottsdale Recovery Center is to build a foundation of sobriety on solid rock, not shifting sand. So that when the waves of life come (and they will come), our clients may get knocked down, but when they stand up, the foundation remains."
